ESC Is The Latest in Automotive Safety

Nissan Cars As any Nissan dealer can tell you, cars are becoming more and more safe all the time. One of the most interesting safety technologies to appear in the last several years has been Electronic Stability Control. Electronic Stability Control, also known as ESC for short, is a system that helps recognize when there is a loss of steering or a skid in a vehicle. The ESC then responds to this loss of steering by applying brake pressure to individual brakes to bring the car’s movement more in line with what the driver intends.

How it works

ESC is a system based on sensor input. These sensors determine where the car is going and where the driver is attempting to steer. By comparing those two things, ESC can cause a car to move the way that the driver wants it to move, even while the vehicle is moving in a different way. Obviously, ESC can’t add traction or change the physical limitations of the vehicle, but it can help the driver maintain control and the ability to effectively utilize the car’s abilities and traction.

An ESC system has several sensors. Some of the most important ones are:

  • The steering wheel angle sensor
  • The yaw rate sensor
  • The lateral acceleration sensor
  • The wheel speed sensor

ESC uses these sensors to determine how the driver intends to steer the vehicle and to determine how the vehicle is actually moving. ESC then compares those two factors and applies pressure to specific brakes to try to bring the actual movement path in line with the path the driver intends.

At your Nissan dealer in Hainesport, NJ, we can help you further understand ESC and how Nissan is using that technology and others to make sure your driving experience is as safe as it can be.
