What Disaster Responders Should Know: Part Three, Advance Preparation
This week we have been discussing the things that disaster responders should know before heading into a disaster zone. When disaster strikes, it is natural to respond based on instinct rather than logic. However, it is always best to be prepared in advance, so that you will instinctively do things the right way. If you feel that you would like to part of the relief effort when the next disaster hits, there are several things that you can do to prepare yourself.
Get First Aid and CPR Certification
These two classes are an excellent idea for anyone, whether or not you will be heading into a disaster zone. For disaster responders, they become critical. Whether you plan to participate in direct rescues or not, your chances of coming upon people who need emergency medical care are virtually 100%. In the early days of disaster aftermath, emergency responders such as police and ambulances are generally low on manpower and communications, and overwhelmed by the sheer number of people that need help. It therefore falls to the first responder citizens to do what they can. No one who ventures into a disaster zone should be missing these critical skills.
Take a First Responder Course
Organizations such as the Red Cross offer first responder training classes on a regular basis. This class is significantly more in-depth than a basic First Aid course and covers the topics that can help you save lives in a disaster zone. After completion of the course, you can also be added to the Red Cross Certified First Responder list, which will allow you to be in the first wave of Red Cross responders to a disaster.
Assemble Your Supplies
Many disaster responders find it difficult to locate, purchase and assemble their tools and other gear at the time of an emergency. If you think that you might respond, take the time to make a complete list of gear. Purchase your supplies and assemble them in an easy to transport form. You can keep them in the bed of your Nissan truck or in an easily accessed part of your home.
Responding to a disaster is one of the most giving things you will ever do, and a bit of advance preparation can help ensure that you are successful.
