Nissan Vs. Porsche
It all started on Tuesday when Porsche announced that it had taken the new Nissan GT-R out for a spin to test some of the company’s claims. Porsche tested the GT-R at Nurburgring and failed to come close to the claims from Nissan for speed. The company subsequently claimed that Nissan’s claims for the speed of the vehicle were on non-factory available tires.
Uh oh.
Nissan fired back at Porsche at the Paris Auto Show, telling a throng of reporters that they did not cheat and use non-factory tires and that they had no idea how the good folks at Porsche couldn’t reach the claimed speeds.
“Quite simply we’re not going to get into a war of words with Porsche,” said Neil Reeve, Nissan’s European spokesman. “The final word from us is that it was done on absolutely standard tires which are available to customers in the showroom. They’re not trick tires – absolutely standard tires, normal road tires.”
Using a former F1 driver, Nissan set a lap record of 7 minutes and 29 seconds. When Porsche tried it with an unidentified driver (could’ve been my grandma), they reached 7 minutes and 54 seconds. In Automobile World, that’s quite a significant difference and offers more than enough for the two companies to quibble over.
If you think you can take the GT-R for a lap of 7:29, maybe you ought to drop on by a dealer and shop around. If the GT-R is simply too much to handle (as it is for me!), there are plenty of other Nissan cars with which to test your grit and determination.
