Nissan Goes to the Bees
Sure, we’ve all had visions of running from a horde of bumblebees and splashing straight into a pond in hopes of shaking the beasts off of us. Those of us with allergies are even more wary, possibly even avoiding the entire summer just to steer clear of their acerbic presence. Those stingers, that buzzing! Forget it; it’s for the birds!
But others are finding a whole lot of use with the bees, namely Nissan with its development of crash prevention technology. Ever since Ali told us that he’d “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” we have been waiting to use the little things to improve….something. And along it comes in the form of crash avoidance technology from Nissan.
Meet the Biomimetic Car Robot Drive, or BR23C. This is a metre-high robot with a sensor that recreates the highly complex eyes of a bumblebee, enabling the operator to detect an object up to two metres away in a 180-degree radius. Pretty sweet huh? Maybe even honey sweet? Yeah, I’ll lay off the bee jokes…
In all seriousness, this technology is a logical leap for Nissan and, sure enough, other car companies will be following suit using this technology to improve their vehicles’ crash avoidance strategies. By looking to the bees for help, Nissan proves not only that they have a certain connection with nature but that they aren’t afraid to look silly in the process of turning out one buzzing piece of technology after another.
