Nissan Exec Says Company Will Still Reach Sales Targets

October 06, 2008 | jcme | Comments 0

A top executive at Nissan is reporting that Japan’s third-largest automaker is still on target to meet its sales projections for the year and will, in fact, meet those projections despite a downturn in the economy and slumping sales figures.

While some may discard this report from the executive as stockholder talk in order to keep things positive around the Nissan company, there may be some truth to the claim.

The sales target, which is 3.9 million vehicles sold globally this year, is looking a bit on the high side thanks to the changing global economics. With the stock market dropping like a stone and the general economic forecast not looking all that great, many analysts charge that Nissan’s confidence may be slightly misplaced.

But Nissan remains bold: “So far we still think 3.9 million is reachable,” Executive Vice President Carlos Tavares said at the Paris Motor Show. “Of course if everything collapses in the next months we need to acknowledge that.”

There may be some encouraging news to go with the announcement from Tavares, as global sales of Nissan cars went up 5% in the first six months to the end of September. Whether this increase will continue remains to be seen, but perhaps the increase will provide a little more than positive energy to help bolster Nissan’s claims.
