Nissan Evolution: The Nissan Pathfinder
The Nissan Pathfinder — known elsewhere in the world as the Nissan Terrano — was one of Nissan’s first forays into the SUV market. Originally designed as a compact sport utility vehicle, it has since entered the mid size class. The Pathfinder made its debut in 1986 and is still in production.
When the Nissan Pathfinder first came to market, it shared its styling and most of its components with the Nissan Hardbody Truck. The Pathfinder was originally released in its first generation as a two door vehicle but soon moved over to the four door version. Keeping the original design, Nissan improved the engine from the basic throttle body injection and upgraded it to a multi point fuel injection one.
In 1996, Nissan completely redesigned the Pathfinder. The second generation version had a more rounded appearance, and the frame of the design changed to a unibody construction from the original body on frame variety. With the redesign the Pathfinder also got bigger, making way for a new model of compact sport utility vehicle, the Nissan Xterra.
Ready for another redesign, Nissan once again overhauled the appearance of the Pathfinder in time for the North American International Auto Show in 2004. Now made exclusively in the United States for the domestic market and in Barcelona, Spain for the rest of the world, the new Nissan Pathfinder is the sport utility vehicle of choice for many American consumers. Throughout the rest of the world, the Pathfinder goes by an alternative name of Terrano, although the car is exactly the same.
