Nissan Cube Super Mini Making UK Debut
Long a smash hit in Japan, the Nissan Cube Super Mini is making its official United Kingdom debut. After more than a year of rumors that the super seller is going to launch in other markets, the Cube is finally ready to hit Europe. Along with the Cube, Nissan will be launching the Qashqai+2 and a smaller soft-roader that will fit below the Qashqai, although this new vehicle has yet to be named.
The Nissan Cube has become a cultural icon in Japan, and there’s a lot of buzz surrounding its global launch. Known for its high-roofed and asymmetric boxy design, the Cube will come to the UK sometime in 2009 and will feature either a 1.5 liter diesel engine or a 1.6 petrol engines.
Before the Cube shows up across the water, Nissan will be launching the Qashqai+2 this September. Also launching are a five seat Murano 4×4 with a V6 3.5 liter gas engine, and a likely four-cylinder 2.5 liter diesel version by the following year. The price point will be similar to the current £30,000 vehicle — about $60,000.
Nissan is clearly moving in a new direction with these product launches — away from the conventional hatchbacks, sedans and MPVs and in the direction of 4x4s, sports cars, smaller cars, and soft roaders. Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn’s announcement is likely to be well received by UK auto enthusiasts who will likely be thrilled to be presented with a whole new set of vehicle options.
