Nissan Breaks Ground On Chennai Plant
After much press and media exposure, Renault Nissan had a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday breaking ground on the new Chennai, India plant.
Sylvain Blaine, the Managing Director of Renault, says that the Chennai plant for Renault Nissan will be creating entirely new lines of cars specifically designed with the Indian buying market in mind. “The company is currently developing a product range to best match Indian customer’s needs, tastes and dreams,” said Blaine today.
The plant, which will cover over 800 acres of land, will be creating over 4000 direct and 12000 indirect new jobs in the area of India. It’s expected that the plant will be fully operational by 2010, and that it will build more than four million automobiles per year, both for export and domestically within the Indian market.
The Indian car market is expected to be a major earner for automakers no matter where they are based. Traditionally, Indian buyers want smaller and more fuel efficient cars, something that both Nissan and Renault are experts at. The Nissan and Renault line up is expected to be the perfect fit for the Indian buyer, offering compact sizing and affordable prices.
Experts are predicting that car sales will double in India by 2013 as more and more people in the country achieve greater relative earning power and are able to start making major purchases. Many major American companies are outsourcing entire departments to India now, which has put a high demand on cars for transportation to and from work which was in many cases unnecessary a few decades ago.
Combine a greater household income with more members of the family needing to get to work — especially female workers who have traditionally not gone out of the home to work in the past — and it’s no wonder there’s a demand for new Nissan cars in the market.
