Nissan 2008 Offers Buyout to Tennessee Workers

August 01, 2008 | | Comments 0

So it looks like Nissan 2008 is going to be offering buyouts to workers at two Tennessee plants to cut costs as the company dumps its truck production in response to obvious sales slumps. The buyouts will range anywhere up to $125,000, which could be a good deal or a bad deal depending on where you sit.

Naturally, a buyout is a lot better than a simple kick in the butt that Ford and GM workers are probably used to by now. I know from where I sit that I’d much rather prefer a hefty buyout than a picket sign and a cup of cold morning Minnesota coffee as I traipse up-and-down an imaginary line decrying my former employer for being so short-sighted as to not know what was coming…

But I digress. Nissan 2008 seems to be the better option, doesn’t it?

The car business is an interesting one and it can be difficult to work in the field these days. I have a lot of respect for those individuals who plod gracefully to work every morning on the assembly line without certainty as to how their days will end. Are they working for a company who is in touch with the direction of the automotive industry or are they up the creek without a paddle, like GM workers?

As far as I can tell, it’s much more likely that those making Nissan cars wound up a lot luckier than their American car-making counterparts.
