Irish Friends Travelling Mongolia in 1994 Nissan Micra
When most people think of adventure vacations, they think of tour guides, hiking boots and sleeping in a tree house or a tent. As far as two particular Irish men are concerned, that’s not an adventure at all.
Malcolm Goode and Seoirse McGrath are taking their 1000 cc 1994 Nissan Micra across Mongolia in the Mongol Rally. They’ll be driving over ten thousand miles and only have three weeks to do it in. They’ve got their fingers crossed that the trip will go uneventfully as they have to get back to Ireland in time for work on Monday morning.
The rules for the Mongol Rally are flexible, but one necessity is that their vehicle have an engine less than one litre. The Micra lives up to its name and is just the right car for the job. They’ll be spending a lot of time in their car as there won’t be time for a whole lot of sleeping or sightseeing in their race across the desert.
“We will most likely be sleeping in the car most of the time with maybe the odd night in a hostel but we will have to make the most of the daylight as it won’t be safe to travel in the dark with large trucks and road bandits,” says Malcolm, a truck driver. “We both have a fair bit or experience with engines and Seoirse in particular is pretty good but there will be no support vehicles so we have to do the best we can.”
Considering they’ll be driving through Poland, Germany, the Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekestan, Kazakhstan, and back through a Russian mountain range before finally setting wheels on Mongolian sand in their used Nissan car, one hopes their estimations about their automotive abilities are correct.
